Clever Home Improvement Tricks
With the incessant rush and chaos that is Christmas now out of the way, it is time to see the New Year in with a fresh, new start. So whatever plans you may have had in mind to spruce up your home last year that were pushed aside for some reason or another – now would be the optimal time to tackle those home improvements.
A fresh makeover can do wonders for the feel and aesthetical value of your home. Not only this, if you plan on renting out your property at some point in the near future, there are numerous things you can do to spruce up your home in readiness for your new tenants…
l If you are giving your walls a fresh lick of paint, opt for neutral colours rather than vivid shades. Many people can be put off with bright colours in the home so leaving them with more of a neutral, blank canvas is your best bet. Strong colours are also known to affect mood changes; opt for warm ivories and creamy whites, instead
l If your rooms look a bit tired then the most effective way to lift the space is simply a fresh lick of paint and some good lighting – effective yet inexpensive!
l On the other hand, giving the bedrooms a little character can add significant visual interest to your home. Rather than using bright colours for the walls or flooring, try accessorising with a pop of colour here and there instead; a bright cushion, a unique accent chair in the corner or even a distinctive rug can do wonders to lift the mood of a room
l If you tend to generally have smaller rooms in the home, steer clear of dark hues and unnecessary clutter. Instead, keep accessories to a minimum and opt for a striking mirror which can instantly enhance the room by creating the illusion of a bigger space
l Lighting is a key element in the home that many people often seem to overlook. Bathrooms and kitchens should predominantly be brightly lit, whereas you can opt for dimmer lighting in the bedroom for a more relaxing atmosphere. Placing a tall floor lamp in the corner of the living space goes a long way into creating a cosy atmosphere and makes for a great feature piece too. If your home has very little natural light then the obvious choice would be to opt for brighter lighting and pale walls
l If your windows are slightly on the smaller side, hanging drapery near the top of the ceiling can do wonders to elongate your windows. Simply hang the curtain rod closer to the ceiling and the drapery will fall just below the wall - covering the wall space – leaving you with the appearance of ornate floor to ceiling windows
l If you have hardwood floors, ensure there are sufficient rugs to make your home look cosier and inviting as opposed to cold and clinical
l To avoid a build-up of clutter in smaller areas of your home, invest in versatile furniture that serves multiple purposes - for example, a futon or sofabed can be a seating space but also double up as a bed - and storage furniture such as storage beds and ottomans can be incredibly handy indeed
There is so much you can do in order to improve the visual aesthetics of your home - whether you are on a budget or not. Once accomplished, all that is left to do is kick back, relax and enjoy the fruits of your labour.
